Take a peek at what kind of art I have been working on in my sketchbook - The Illustrai

Hey guys! It's been a while since I have posted on my blog... :( I was busy with school deadlines and then as soon as school ended I got a stomach bug! I'm finally feeling better - thank goodness - and am hoping to revive the blog this summer :)

But besides posting more often, I am also going to be changing up the blog a bit. I have felt for a while now that my blog currently doesn't reflect what I want it to. Before, I was primarily sharing DIY tutorials, the occasional art tutorial, and free downloads. I love sharing tutorials but I feel like my blog is missing that personal touch. Being so shy and introverted, I've never been one to like sharing personal things about myself. Though I doubt I will ever be considered an open book, I still want my blog to reflect me and my personality. So I hope to share more of myself on this blog while also focusing more on my art. In a way, this also relates to being more open and personal because though I have shared art tutorials, I have never really shared any actual finished art with you guys! Therefore, I still will be creating tutorials but I will also try to share more of my actual artwork as well.

Speaking of sharing my artwork, let's get to the real purpose of this post: I've decided to create this blog series called "Sketchbook Diaries" so that I can share my current art experiments and give you all a peek at my sketchbooks. I love seeing other people's sketchbooks so I hope you enjoy this series!

Here I did some simple sketches of lavender sprigs using pencil and colored pencils. I intentionally left some of them "unfinished" and others in colored pencil because I really liked the way it looked. I also have a little fun fact for you in the spirit of sharing; I actually hate real lavender plants, I just like drawing them! The way I see it, they aren't very attractive plants in real life. Plus, they attract bees! No thanks.

This page was my little test with markers. No fancy Copics here, just some old Crayola markers that I have had for who knows how long. I never use markers so I really just wanted to try out layering them and experiment. I had zero plans for the actual content of this page at the beginning and ended up just drawing flowers from my head, while grabbing whatever color that spoke to me. It didn't end up too bad, just a fun little page :)

These last two were also kind of random pages. I had originally started with the dotted page because I was experimenting with patterns. Though I used the ink on later patterns, this was actually just black marker. Later on, I came back and added the green leaves because I had just gotten gouache paints for the first time ever and was trying to get a feel for them. I had mixed the two colors shown above in a palette when I was testing out the paint and just wanted to use it all up. And that was how this leaf page was born. These two pages were so random but don't they just look splendid next to each other?!

So that's just a couple of things I was working on this week, stay tuned for more sketchbook diaries in the future! In the meantime, you can always check out my Instagram for more peeks at my artwork.
