How to Draw an Autumn Flower Bouquet

A detailed tutorial on how to draw an Autumn inspired flower bouquet that includes step by step example images for each element, as well as example images showing how to arrange the bouquet itself.

It's finally autumn and I couldn't be happier about that fact! I'm pretty sure I've said multiple times how much I hate summer (sorry, not sorry), so of course I had to have some kind of blog post celebrating the start of the new season! I wanted to make a fun autumn themed tutorial and figured I would show you guys how to draw a cute flower bouquet using fall inspired colors and flowers. You can see in the graphic above what the finished bouquet looks like, as well as a list of what types of flowers I used (featuring my cramped and messy handwriting!).

Before I go into how to draw the bouquet itself, I thought that I would include a little graphic tutorial on how I drew each element. I feel like they're pretty self explanatory, so you can just reference the image above if you need help on how to draw a certain flower.

Now for the tutorial! I will also include some general tips that are important to note below.

TIPS:

  • A good rule of thumb is to have less of your largest elements and more of your smaller elements to keep the bouquet looking balanced.
  • When drawing flowers, don't draw the stems until the very end (or just draw them very lightly so that you can draw other elements on top of them) so that when you add more elements, you can decide which to draw in front or in back.
  • Draw in order from flowers, to greenery, and then to accents. Within that sequence, work from largest to smallest.
  • As an exception to the sequence rule stated previously, if you have a very dark element (like the branches in this example), you might want to draw them last, or like I said previously, draw them VERY lightly. Since elements should overlap each other in a realistic bouquet, if you draw a something too dark in the middle, you can't really add anything in "front" of it and it might end up looking kind of weird!

How to Draw an Autumn Flower Bouquet

  1. When I draw a bouquet, I always start with the primary flowers (the focal point), or in other words, the largest flowers. In this case, draw the sunflowers and poppies first, keeping them grouped in the middle.
  2. Next, draw the smaller flowers, which would be the craspedia. Keep these grouped in the middle as well.
  3. Now that you have the main flowers, you're going to move on to greenery: starting with the largest plant, eucalyptus. Add three branches, one in the middle and one on each side.
  4. Next, draw the smaller plant, which are the leafy branches. Evenly disperse these throughout the bouquet.
  5. By this point, you should have a basic bouquet shape. Add in the Queen Anne's lace and chamomile branches on one side of the bouquet to fill in gaps. These will be the accents.
  6. Lastly, draw the branches. Technically, I consider these part of the greenery, but I wanted to draw them last because they are so dark (see the tips above). Once the bouquet is fully formed you can draw them in segments to give the appearance of other elements overlapping. As you can see above, the left branch is going behind a poppy, so you would draw part of the branch above the poppy and then continue drawing the rest of the branch below it.
Phew, that was a lot of info huh!? Hopefully that made sense! I feel that as an artist you intuitively know what you're doing, but explaining the mechanics of it can be quite complicated. Do let me know if you have any questions, just leave a comment below. If you end up trying this, I would love it if you tagged me on Instagram or just send me a picture so that I can see your bouquet! :)
